Finding the Right Niche for Your Online Business: Is It That Important?

How important is it that you find the right niche for you online business? Surprisingly, it's less than you think. There are so many possibilities, that many are right. That is, many will work. So it's far less important that you pick the right one, than to pick any of them, and then to get started.

Those who set up their business online for the first time often spend an inordinate amount of time just searching for the best niche to be in. Although this is an important decision, it's also a fact that the niche you start with will be different from the one you end up with.

Suppose that you want to open an ice cream store. After wondering around your neighborhood you soon realized that there wasn't one.

You could spend months thinking about whether your scoops should be shaped like balls or cubes (there was a store when I was quite young that had six-sided scoops.); what toppings to offer; whether you should have a dozen flavors or 31. You could agonize over whether to buy a franchise or just start a one-off with no intention of building any more.

While all of these decisions have their place, in the end, none of them may be the same after a year or two. How often have you gone to a restaurant that you used to frequent, only to discover that the menu had changed?

In an online business, there are as many or more decisions that you could make: Should your products be digital or physical? Should you make PDFs, mp3s, or video. Should you all your customers to download it directly to their computers, or consume it only on your web site?

The most important thing that you can do is to choose a niche that has enough interest for you to develop products and market them. That's it! As your list builds and you start to get customers, you'll learn from them what they want. And as you tweak your products to be more specific to their needs, you'll often find that your niche gradually changes from what it started out as to something a little different.

So, for example, you may start out by offering digital products for dog owners, but later specialize in Golden Retrievers. And later, you could find that your customers really want to know how to care for and raise puppies.

What niche have you chosen? What direction does your niche appear to be moving towards?
